What size excavator do I need?
Match weight to job: 1-3 ton minis for utility / landscape; 8-15 ton midi for general site work; 20-30 ton standard for production aggregate / demo; 40-50+ ton mass excavators for big quarry / large-volume earthmoving. Bucket size scales roughly with machine weight.
How many hours is too many on a used excavator?
Tier 4 industrial diesel engines (Cummins QSL, Cat C9, Hitachi/Isuzu 6HK1) typically have 12,000-18,000 hours of useful life with proper maintenance. A machine at 5,000-8,000 hours that's been well-cared-for is a strong buy. Past 12,000 hours, expect to price in pump/cylinder/undercarriage work.
