Common questions about used mulchers

What size mulcher do I need?

For brush and small trees up to 6" diameter, a 75-100 HP mulcher (skid steer mounted, e.g. Fecon BH74) is plenty. For mid-size trees up to 10-12", look at 200-300 HP tracked carriers (Prinoth Raptor, ASV RT135). For heavy ROW work and trees 14"+, you need a dedicated 350-500 HP machine (FAE PT-475, Tigercat M726E).

How many hours is too many on a used mulcher?

Tracked mulchers run hard — they spend more time at full PTO load than almost any other heavy equipment. A well-maintained machine at 4,000-6,000 hours can still have years of life; one at 8,000+ hours should be priced for upcoming undercarriage and head rebuild work. Always pull a sample of the head's hydraulic fluid for analysis on inspection.
