Single-drum vs double-drum roller?
Single-drum (smooth or padfoot): for soil, sub-base, and embankment compaction. The drum is up front; the rear is rubber tires for traction. Double-drum: for asphalt paving — both drums smooth, both vibrate, and they leave a smooth finished surface. Different jobs, different machines.
How many hours is too many on a used roller?
Rollers are simpler than excavators or wheel loaders — they accumulate hours slowly. A well-maintained machine at 4,000-6,000 hours can have decades of life left. Past 8,000 hours, expect upcoming vibratory bearing work.
